David O. Russell’s Next Film Gets A Title: ‘American Hustle’
While we might actually prefer the original working title “American Bullshit,” it may well have given the marketing bods an aneurism, so the official title for David O. Russell’s current work in progress has been rolled out today, and it’s not too shabby at all.
Box Office Mojo has revealed that it will now be called “American Hustle,” in all probably a much more comfortable title for the good folk at Sony/Columbia Pictures to work with. What else can we tell you? The movie is one we’re definitely looking forward to and has spawned what are easily the best set photos of the year so far. The cast is pretty ace too, as might be expected for a director whose last effort had a great night at the Oscars– Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, and Robert De Niro all return from “Silver Linings Playbook,” as well as Christian Bale, Jeremy Renner, Amy Adams, Louis C.K., Alessandro Nivola, Elisabeth Rohm, Dawn Olivieri, Jack Huston and Michael Pena)– and the based-on-a-true-story tale seems ripe for a healthy dose of both comedy and drama, the twin cores of Russell’s wheelhouse.
The plot concerns a financial con artist (Bale) and his mistress/partner in crime (Adams), who are forced to work with an out-of-control federal agent (Cooper) to turn the tables on other con artists, mobsters and politicians. In the centre of all this is the passionate and volatile leader of the New Jersey state assembly (Renner), who is also something of a local hero and mayor of the impoverished district of Camden.
That’s pretty much all all for now. “American Hustle” (so good to finally have a name!) opens in limited release on December 13th and goes wide on Christmas Day.

Jennifer Lawrence Pranked by Christian Bale & Bradley Cooper
BRADLEY Cooper and Christian Bale played a funny gag on the costar Jennifer Lawrence while they were filming their still-untitled movie in Boston.
The trio were shooting scenes in a cemetery when the joke took place.
“They were planning to shoot a night scene in an old Boston cemetery when Jennifer, who’s usually up for anything, told the director and her male costars, Bradley and Christian Bale, that she was feeling uneasy and scared.
“She insisted she must never be left alone during the shoot – and asked that they film as fast as possible, then get the hell out. Everyone agreed, and her costars tried to calm her down.
“What Jennifer didn’t know was that Bradley and Bale got the prop guys to carve a fake tombstone — then plant it right where they’d be filming.
“So on the night, under pale moonlight, Oscar winner Jen suppressed a shiver as the director yelled, ‘ACTION!”…but bravely stepped into the ancient graveyard – and screamed as she spotted a gravestone that read: “JENNIFER LAWRENCE, born August 15, 1890. Died April 1, 1913.”
“Shaking in terror, Jennifer shrieked, ‘That’s MY name!…Is this just a coincidence, or am I going to die!’
“Laughing their fool heads off, the jolly jokesters chilled Jen by pointing out that the tombstone date of her ‘expiration’ was APRIL 1… ‘That’s April Fool’s Day, dummy,’ howled the guys.”
