'Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins'

IGN watches exclusive footage and talks to McG about the ending and sequels.

Yesterday evening IGN was invited to a special “roadshow” event for the upcoming Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins in Leicester Square, London. We were shown some world exclusive footage from the movie, but before that we were present for an in-depth Q & A with the enthusiastic director of the movie, McG. Here are some of his more interesting comments:

(Warning: Spoilers Follow)

Why another Terminator?

“Initially, I didn’t want to do it. I was not that excited by the idea of a fourth Terminator movie, I thought, ‘Why flog a dead horse?’ Especially when James Cameron did such a great job on the first few films.

“I then started thinking about the film, how would be set after the nuclear apocalypse wrought by Cyberdyne at the end of the last movie and would have a ‘post-nuclear apocalypse look’ that was only alluded to in the previous films. This made think the film might be more interesting… maybe!” Read the rest of this entry »

After agonising over a list of eligible, high profile film stars, musicians and athletes, editors at the magazine named the 40-year-old its number one of 2008.

Jackman succeeds last year’s top man Matt Damon, and George Clooney who took the title the year before.

In a special edition of the weekly magazine, there were honourable mentions for handsome contenders Daniel Craig, Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, Seal, Robert Downey Jr., Will Smith, Christian Bale and David Beckham.

'Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins'

The new Terminator movie will “reinvigorate the franchise”, Hollywood director McG has promised at a preview of footage in central London.

The film-maker also said the film, Terminator Salvation, would “push the envelope” with its hi-tech visual effects.

Set in 2018 in the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust, the film depicts a “dirty, gritty, difficult” world in which human survivors are preyed upon by lethal robots.

Batman actor Christian Bale plays John Connor, leader of the resistance against the cyborg army.

“When he came on board I knew we had the chance to do something special,” the director told reporters.

Other cast members include Bryce Dallas Howard, Australian Sam Worthington and Anton Yelchin, soon to be seen in the new Star Trek film. Read the rest of this entry »

'Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins' Headlines & Rumors

The director of Terminator: Salvation left a prank message on Christian Bale’s phone during the first ever screening of footage from the film.

McG hosted the world’s first preview screening of six to seven minutes of footage from the unfinished film at London’s Vue West End and told the audience he had arranged to call Christian, who plays John Connor, during the screening.

One guest said: “McG told us he was dialling Christian’s number but he got voicemail. He left a message saying he was in the cinema with us and that we were all excited and he held up his iPhone so we could scream down the phone to Christian.

“Then he jokingly told Christian he had told us all he was moody, and hung up.”

McG also rubbished rumours circulating on the internet about the ending of the new film, the fourth Terminator movie. Read the rest of this entry »

'Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins'

John Connor to utter iconic line in T4, but why?IGN was invited to a special Terminator Salvation road show last night where we shown exclusive unseen footage from the film, as well treated to a Q&A session with director McG.

We’ll post our full event report later today, but in the bar afterwards we were also able to corner the helmer for an exclusive - albeit short - one-on-one chat. Firstly we asked him how much of The Terminator mythology would be appearing in the new film.

“A whole lot, honestly, every night whilst we were writing the script and making the film, we would sit down and watch the first three films, literally cherry picking elements we could introduce into Salvation…” Read the rest of this entry »

The Dark Knight is listed at number #3 on Entertainment Weekly’s The 25 Entertainers Of The Year.

3. CAST AND CREW OF THE DARK KNIGHT
In 1939, cartoonist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger created the brooding urban vigilante known as Batman as a comic-book rival to the medium’s hottest property — the brighter, happier Superman. Now, thanks toThe Dark Knight, which was imbued with provocative new meaning and must-see urgency following Heath Ledger’s tragic death in January and went on to gross $528 million, Batman stands masked head and caped shoulders above his fictional superfriends as the pinnacle of Hollywood superhero pop. To the filmmakers and stars behind this triumph, we offer a toast. —Jeff Jensen

'The Dark Knight' Headlines & Rumors

While many industry observers are predicting that the planned December 9 release of The Dark Knight on DVD will become the year’s biggest video hit, a few others suggest that next Tuesday’s release of Disney/Pixar’s Wall-E should not be overlooked. They point out that animated features have a long history of dominance in home-video sales and that Wall-e is one of the few that holds as much appeal for adults as it does for children. Meanwhile, websites that focus on high-definition fare have unanimously endorsed the Blu-ray version of Wall-e as the HD gold standard. On dvdtown.com, James Plath begins his review of the Blu-ray release with the single word “Wow.” He calls the picture detail “remarkable” and says that it often displays a “pleasing” 3-D quality that gives the illusion of depth “without ‘popping’ the figures out at you as if you were watching a film with those funny cardboard glasses.” On bluray.com, Ben Williams calls the video quality “flawless … simply stunning.” He adds: “Wall-e is as perfect and stunning on Blu-ray as anyone could have hoped.” On highdefdigest.com, Peter M. Bracke calls the Wall-e Blu-ray package “a truly ground-breaking achievement.” He goes on to write that it is “guaranteed to rank as a new demo disc of choice. … Pixar has crowed that there is not a pixel out of place, and the hyperbole is justified. Wall-E is a visual masterpiece.” Read the rest of this entry »

'The Dark Knight' Headlines & Rumors

Well, now this sucks – The Dark Knight’s score, which to Empire’s ears is one of the best, if not the best, of the year, has been disqualified from consideration for next year’s Academy Awards.

The executive committee of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science’s music branch made the decision after failing to be suitably satisfied that the score’s composers, James Newton Howard and Hans Zimmer, were directly responsible for more than 70% of the music.

That’s because – in a show of generosity and solidarity – Zimmer and Howard, who collaborated on the Batman Begins soundtrack, listed three other people as composers on the official cue sheet, the document that specifies every piece of music in the film. Read the rest of this entry »

Batman has a new adversary: Batman.

The mayor of an oil-producing city in southeastern Turkey, which has the same name as the Caped Crusader, is suing helmer Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. for royalties from mega-grosser “The Dark Knight.”

'The Dark Knight' Headlines & Rumors

ISTANBUL - The mayor of Batman, a city recently under scrutiny due to unsolved murders and increasing rates of female suicides, will sue the director of the movie “Batman” movie.

Not a superhero with supernatural abilities, or a person wealthy enough to buy high-tech toys to fight evil, but a simple human being named Hüseyin Kalkan, the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party mayor of the southeastern city of Batman, declared war against his city’s namesake superhero, Batman.

“The royalty of the name ‘Batman’ belongs to us … There is only one Batman in the world. The American producers used the name of our city without informing us,” Kalkan told to the Do?an news agency. Batman is a centuries old city, taking root in the Neolithic age but becoming significant when oil was found in the region at the end of 1940s. Almost a decade before that, Batman was created as a comic hero. Kalkan is going to sue Christopher Nolan, the director of the latest Batman movie “The Dark Night,” not DC Comics, the creator of the superhero. Read the rest of this entry »

'The Dark Knight' Headlines & Rumors

The Dark Knight came to the rescue of Time Warner, helping it to boost third-quarter revenue. The film has grossed $527 million worldwide. DVD sales were Ok, largely as a result of the popularity of the Sex and the City DVD release, but the company noted that profits paled in comparison with its sales at the same time last year for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Time Warner also reported solid results from its cable networks CNN, TNT, TBS and its pay-tv outlet HBO. In a statement, CEO Jeffrey Bewkes said that the company has the “ability to weather difficult economic conditions and the flexibility to invest in the long-term competitive position of our business in a period when others may have to retrench.” However, revenue from its AOL unit continued a persistent descent, falling another 17 percent during the quarter. Shares of Time-Warner were down 5 percent to $9.64 in late-afternoon trading.

In honour of star Michael Fassbender’s dramatic (but medically-supervised) weight-loss to play the role of hunger-strike leader Bobby Sands in Hunger, we doff our caps to 5 other actors who famously skipped a meal or two in the name of method acting.

CB is #6: Christian Bale, The Machinist
To play insomnia-addled Trevor Resnik in The Machinist, Bale is said to have dropped from 182lbs all the way down to 119lbs by eating just an apple and a can of tuna every day, while smoking to suppress his appetite. Producers claim that Bale wanted to go down below 100lbs, but strangely enough they wouldn’t allow it - something about safety, health, insurance, or just common sense perhaps? Still Bale’s 63lb drop holds the record for movie weight-loss thus far and as this image will testify, the result was nothing short of horrific.

'The Dark Knight' Headlines & Rumors

A British jury investigating the death of a special-effects technician on “The Dark Knight” was told that he was killed in an accident during the shooting of a stunt, The Guardian reported. Conway Wickliffe, 41, was killed on Sept. 25, 2007, during the filming of a chase sequence for “The Dark Knight,” the blockbuster Batman movie directed by Christopher Nolan.

On Monday the jurors at a coroners’ court in Surrey, England, were told that Mr. Wickliffe had been riding in the back seat of a Nissan four-wheel-drive pickup driving parallel to a stunt car; the vehicle carrying Mr. Wickliffe crashed into a tree when it missed a 90-degree turn.

The jury will rule on an official cause of death. A stunt technician who had worked on “Casino Royale,” “Children of Men,” “Batman Begins” and other films, Mr. Wickliffe was honored in the closing credits of “The Dark Knight,” along with the actor Heath Ledger, who died before the film’s release.

'Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins' Headlines & Rumors

Rising up from the plateau of the Albuquerque desert is the burned remnants of a concrete highway overpass, riddled with fissures and mangled steel reinforcement rods. Exposed openings of two water ducts jut out. Atop the ledge of the precipice, a figure is about to jump. Dressed in a black bomber jacket and combat boots, with weaponry slung about his waist, he hesitates for a second and then plummets head first to the ground. Supported by barely visible cables, his descent seems to almost be in slow motion.

“Hey, Christian, that looked great!” The voice belongs to a tall figure in a Penguin shirt, black shorts, and a white Stetson, hidden from the desert heat in a makeshift tent. McG watches the action from behind several monitors but also keeps an eagle eye on the set towering above him. “Did you see me start to spin though?” laughs Bale, before downing a bottle of red Vitamin Water. I have uploaded new candid photos of Christian out & about in Los Angeles on October 28, 2008.

Actor Christian Bale to become Dr. Strange? According to reports Christian - who played Batman in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight - is rumored to be considering taking on another superhero role - Dr. Strange. Dr. Strange is a Marvel Comics character who was a former surgeon that becomes a powerful sorcerer after a car accident leaves him unable to perform operations. The New Zealand Harold’s online publication nzherald.co.nz writes: ‘A source said Christian is hot property right now, courtesy of Batman.

Doctor Strange is a very different kind of hero to Batman and it’s felt Christian is the sort of actor who can make the part work on screen. It is understood a deal could be struck in the coming weeks… Bale also plays hero John Connor in the upcoming Terminator Salvation and has signed on for two more sequels in the science-fiction franchise. He has also expressed an interest in reprising his role as Batman if a third film is confirmed.’ Also notice Christian carries an art book - nothing will stop this eccentric Welsh actor from arts and culture.
