Agreed! We should have won more. I just don’t understand how a movie that reached the 1 billion mark, which is nothing to sneeze at, didn’t even get nominated for best director or best picture. The only reason they can give, is because it is a comic book movie? Not a good reason in my opinion. Excellent cast, director and crew. Should have been more.
Did you notice that only Chistopher Nolan and his wife Emma, and of course the technical crew that was nominated, were the only ones from the Dark Knight that were at the Oscars? Or am I mistaken? I didn’t see any other cast members. Of course I was looking for CB. (smile)

The Academy usually snubs such films.
They are toffee-nosed. They have this kind of idea that movie like The Dark Knight aren’t suitable for Oscars standards. They waited for the Lord Of The Ring third instalment to give the movie the recognition it deserved, and only after a lot of criticism and polemics for the missed recognitions to the two previous movies of the trilogy. So it’s quite obvious they refused to recognize the Dark Knight success and the unquestionable quality.

On the Public Enemies footage theres a fast and brief scene of someone viciously firing a tommy gun. I paused the image but couldn’t see if it was CB or Depp… it’s too dark. Could anyone identify it?? Liked the scene!

Just wondering. Maybe a collective boycott against the Academy? Seems ironic that not one of the cast members were there. None. Not even Aaron Eckhardt. Usually one or two make the awards ceremony with Christopher Nolan. Interesting. Could be that Christopher supported the movie because he is, of course, the director, and it did receive 8 nominations, 7 technical. So, I guess he felt that he should be there to support the technical crew and Heath and his family.
Wouldn’t that be something if they all got together and boycotted the Academy in their own special defiance? Very quietly. (smile)

I think that would be a very good way of protesting, Jersey, maybe they had some other projects and couldn’t attend the ceremony.
Do you think Bale will ever get nominated to (or win) an Oscar? Personally I think he doesn’t choose or isn’t chosen for the kind of characters that win Oscars. As Jersey said, the films he does don’t get the recognition they deserve.
I think I would give him the Oscar on the category of “Husband go crazy” for Laurel Canyon or “Man about to not exist” for The Machinist hahah what do you think? We should create new categories for Chris.

@everyone
Read this interesting article about the oscar: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/22/business/media/22steal.html?ref=movies
The Academy is already known for snubbing movies just because they made a lot of money. But interesting that sometimes it is the reverse (they are probably bought). Anyone remember Titanic and Shakespeare in Love? They didn’t deserve all those Oscars….

Looks like CB to me…if you look at the hairline…looks like CB’s and not Johnny Depp’s. The forehead also looks like CB’s and not Johnny’s…same with the eyes.

I was angry and chocked that TDK wasn’t nominated for best motion picture of the year!!! :O :@

The Oscars were an incredibly hard watch this year, especially knowing that the movie that most deserved to be nominated, and to an extent the victor, wasn’t even given due recognition. I did appreciate that at least my second choice, Slumdog, did end up winning Best Picture. Still, I found so much of the entire night a blatant dis to the movie going audience, and I couldn’t believe that several no-nome, no-how films were more worthy of Oscar contention.
Honestly, most films ONLY get made to be nominated, which is probably where everything goes wrong in the first place. TDK was purely made for the viewing pleasure of the public, and it practically saved the industry this year. That alone warranted at least due respect.

Frankly I think he doesn’t care.
I think he choose characters that attract him, those that can inwardly enrich him. And above all he runs after good stories. I’m pretty sure that one day he’ll be nominated because his roles are always very empathic and intense and he’s a very credible and talented actor. But you know, there are many actors, who are really talented, that never got an Oscar. And there are some dull actors who actually won it.
Oscar doesn’t make a good actor!

I agree that I don’t think he really cares about winning an Oscar, or enough to pick a role specifically with that in mind. In an interview, he was asked that question about winning an Oscar and he said, he was human, and of course it would be nice, however, he picks roles that interest him and not based on whether they are Oscar worthy.
I agree with Elena that maybe one day, he may get nominated for an Oscar, but the Academy seems to take care of “their own”, whoever that may be. They don’t seem to listen to the masses. CB has been in some great movies and has been overlooked for years, however, it has not deterred him in the slightest or shunned him from receiving praise as an excellent actor from his colleagues.
A good quote from Elena that an “Oscar doesn’t make a good actor”. But, I would also like to add, nor does it make a good movie.

@Lilian
Just read your link to the article. Interesting. Guess that explains a little of why some of the “big Hollywood names” were conspicously absent in the audience at the Oscars. Jack Nicholson, although he hasn’t made anything in awhile, Clint Eastwood, Tom Cruise, etc. Sounds like the Oscars not only snubbed the Dark Knight, but also others in other ways. I heard by way of some internet grumbling, that people were not happy with the Oscars/Academy. I also did not know that the majority of the voters of the Academy voters were indie based. This article seems to me to also hint at the Dark Knight and other movies being snubbed by the Academy as an injustice in the way of not listening to the people and the box office conduct. Some of the movies that were nominated, had low box office return and barely if any made a profit. That…I don’t understand.
CB is an excellent actor and how he could not be recognized by the Academy thru all of his hard work and talent is puzzling to me.

@Zena
“…a blatant dis to the movie going audience…” that’s exactly the reason why the Oscars are losing viewers and respect. They (the Academy) have a lot of prejudices…
@Elena
Absolutely! Thats why he’s in so many different movies: indies, blockbusters, science-fiction, drama, action…. the important thing is an interesting story and character to play. Also he doesn’t mind to be a coadjuvant. There are movie stars that only do leading characters.
@Elena and Zena
I think he should have won a Oscar for Empire of the Sun, when he was a kid. And given all the praise he received at the time I think he would have won, if only they gave Oscars to children at the time as they do now. But in the 80’s they didn’t…. That movie is splendid and is Oscar material, but unfortunately was underrated. For me it is the best movie Spielberg ever made. And I’m not saying this because of CB. It is really beautiful and moving.
I think he also deserved it for American Psycho, The Machinist and Rescue Dawn, but they probably are too unconventional for that.
I still think one day he will end up receiving one, but if he doesn’t…. well, he’s not the first nor last excellent actor to be underrated and overlooked by the Academy (and other awards as well).

They actually did create an award especially for him back then because he was so young, and he received it. I beleive Angelic has it listed.
