Headlines & Rumors

Sir Michael Caine, who played Batman’s faithful butler in The Dark Knight, is thrilled by the late Heath Ledger’s Oscar win for playing The Joker, “stunned” by Christian Bale’s infamous on-set outburst and – has hopes for another sequel.

“I’m so pleased,” the Englishman, 76 – himself a double Oscar winner – tells PEOPLE of the posthumous Academy Award presented Ledger in February. “I thought that it was very important for his family as well. I was a big fan of his from the first time that I met him.”

Caine – whose latest film, Is Anybody There?, opens April 17 – says he had a hunch when he watched Ledger work that the young actor would be honored come Oscar time. “I was absolutely stunned by the way that he did it and the energy that went into it,” he says. “I thought if anyone is going to better that and get an Academy Award above him, I’d pay good money to see that.”What did surprise Caine was his Dark Knight costar Bale’s profanity-laced tirade on the set of this summer’s Terminator: Salvation.

“That stunned me, because he’s not like that at all,” says Caine. “I would never have imagined Christian doing that. It’s completely out of character.”

But the veteran actor says he can relate to the meltdown. “I’m more like that than he is,” he says of Bale, 35. “You’re liable to get a volley off of me if you walk around during my takes.”

Caine recalls losing his own cool on the set of 1970′s The Last Valley after a horse-riding scene went awry: “I outdid Christian by about 30 minutes and with more language than he knew.”

Caine is expecting to return as Alfred Pennyworth for one more Batman film – if and when director Christopher Nolan, with whom he’s made Batman Begins, The Prestige and The Dark Knight, is ready. He jokes, “I hope I’m still alive.”

Caine reveals the next Batman villain “would probably be The Riddler,” and he thinks the right actor may be able to rival Ledger’s indelible performance. “I thought it was going to be a tough job for anyone who played the role after Jack Nicholson” in 1989′s Batman, he says. “Now Heath is the Joker. So we’ll see.”

Johnny Depp the Riddler! all the way.

i believe Johnny Depp would be too expensive for the next Batman!

@ Caro

The Dark Knight made 1 billion USD worldwide, I don’t think after this fact, JD will be too expensive for the next Batman movie. And honestly TDK is 10 x a better movie then the Pirates… and deserved the 1 billion mark much more than Pirates (or Titanic for that matter).

@ Alexandra

This is just my personal view. I don’t mean to offend JD, but I seriously think if he is to play Riddler, he’ll fit into Tim Burton’s Batman world, but not Nolan’s Batman. If you know what I mean… Nolan wants Batman world to be as realistic and plausible as possible… but JD plays comical characters too many times, it’d be very easy for him to slip into such way with Riddler characterization… and it won’t fit Nolan’s world.

Unless Nolan can make him very much grounded.

@Retno

I agree with you 1000%. :D I don’t think any actor is too expensive to the batman franchise at this point, and look how many great actors the first and second had. Ok, they were all actors, not movie stars, but this just makes them better. And seriously, Depp is really overrated. I also don’t think he would fit into Nolans view. Look at the characters and movies Depp made, he always plays caricatures, exaggerated versions of the truth. That makes him great for Burtons movies but not for Nolans, if he plays the Riddler it would look like Jim Carreys Riddler, caricatural. Depp played so much weird characters that I’m finding it difficult to watch him in “normal” roles. Even Public Enemies trailer has a weird feeling for me… feels like he doesn’t quite fit in there because it is too normal.

I also agree with you on the Pirates movies… they were entertaining but just that. If you look closely you really see they actually just a series of action sequencies put together without substance, weak story and silly jokes… they’re as entertaining as a disney ride… empty and you forget it as soon as you leave. It’s my oppinion…

Only the news to do another Batman movie already makes me anxious. Wow! I approach this hero! And the version given by Nolan is simply spectacular. A great choice of actors, even more, and the choice of CB, or we speak!
