Christian Bale, while promoting his new film âTerminator Salvation,â spoke to Access Hollywoodâs Nancy OâDell about his July 2008 blowup on the set of the film, which became public after an audio recording was released in February.
When OâDell broached the topic of the on-set explosion Bale directed toward âTerminator Salvationâ director of photography, Shane Hurlbut, Bale jokingly said, âDo you want to talk about it?â
OâDell asked Bale, from an actorâs perspective, how the incident affected trust issues on the set. âIâll get to feel comfortable again⊠the trust is not set up for covering up bad behavior, thatâs not the reason that itâs set up,â Bale responded. âItâs set up for creative experimentation, so that you can do things, make a fool of yourself, and understand that there is a circle of trust with people â that theyâre not gonna use that to make fun of you because of efforts that youâve made that just didnât work (or) that backfired or whatever. But the (trust) I stress, it ainât for covering up bad behavior.â
Bale said that after having spent nearly three months on the âTerminator Salvationâ set, he did not want the four-minute incident to overshadow the film. And it led him to call into KROQâs Kevin & Bean breakfast show after the tape was first leaked.
âYou think about the numbers of days we shot on that movie â 77 days, everything going well. Whatâs being focused on is four minutes where I behaved bad, you know,â Bale said.
âI didnât want that to overshadow the hard work of everybody on the crew, in every aspect, you know? So I felt like I had to say something. Well, I felt like I had to say something so that we wouldnât have to sit here talking about it right now,â he laughed.
OâDell asked Bale if the incident changed how people viewed him.
âI donât even think about that,â he said. âI donât really have an awareness of what anybodyâs perception of me is, I donât like to. I like being oblivious to that because it allows me just to get on with whatever project Iâm doing.â
While he doesnât worry about what others think of him, he appreciates those that came to his defense following the release of his rant.
âI very much appreciate the people who did say that⊠Still doesnât excuse it, but I do appreciate it,â he said.
