HTML clipboardChristian Bale said he was tempted to take steroids. The actor considered experimenting with the substances when he was trying to build up his physique for roles in ‘Batman Begins’ and ‘American Psycho’. He admitted: “I was lifting really heavy weights that I could never dream of lifting now and probably never will again. A number of people have said, ‘You could never have done that without some kind of steroids.’ Not to say I wasn’t tempted. When I was getting ready for ‘American Psycho’ I’d never been in a gym in my life and I was working out like crazy, so I thought, ‘Maybe it ain’t such a big deal, just take some ‘roids’ and I can speed up this whole process.’”

You really see how the media, as always, likes to put things out of perspective some times. They took the news out of the Esquire magazine, so why they didn’t include the part of him saying he didn’t take them? Ok it says he was tempted, but why cut his answer in the middle? Some people might be dubious in the end if he took them or not…
Sorry, I’m ranting because I read in a magazine here about a book of an american psychologist about narcissism in celebrities and she included Bale in it, saying that authoritarianism is a form of narcissism and saying that CB is authoritariam because of the rant. Yeah… shows how bad she is as a psychologist, judging someone that she never knew by a four minute audio circulating on the net and discarding everything else that shows exactly the contrary, as his life-style, for example. She only wants to sell books by attacking famous people, a growing past time/disease in our time it seems. By the way, I would like to add that other psychologists have analysed the rant and said that Bale wasn’t authoritarian or narcisistic considering how he talked… but of course it isn’t mentioned on the magazine nor in the book.

@eliszabeth: in Esquire,he says No but he was tempted but it’s more easy to buld up fastly! when you take steroid,you have acné and yours balls become tiny! it’s why i wrote he’s not sterile! LOL

@Elizabeth
No he did not take them. He said he was tempted but when he heard about the side effects he gave up the idea for good. If you want to read his complete answer it is in the Esquire magazine. Angelic posted the scans here on the site.

@Lillian
I understand how you feel. The media is always trying to take things out of context and manipulate the wording. However, in this case, the way I read it, the word “tempted” would mean that he thought about it, but didn’t. It actually shows that he had enough sense not to make a wrong decision. Everyone is tempted, but not everyone makes the right choices. In this situation, CB showed that he made the right choice, amongst all of the people making headlines who are actually getting caught taking steroids. I think it is a plus in his direction.
@Caro
LOL
@Elizabeth
He didn’t. In the actual interview, he mentioned what it would do to his nether regions if he actually would take the steroids, and he said “no way!” (I’m cleaning up what he said) (smile)

Lillian, I whole heartedly agree with you. The media can be nasty and unfair. So Mr. Bale blew off steam, so what? I’ve done it and apologized. We are all human, yes?

@ Lillian: Oh, good!
My dad said to me that Christian must have taken steroids while filming Batman Begins! But I told him that he didn’t. Christian said before in an interview that he stuffed his mouth with food and just ate and ate and ate.
I heard that if you’re on a diet and get very skinny and then all of the sudden eat junk food and a lot of food, your body “gets swollen” because it’s not used to all that stuff. That’s exactly what happend with Christian, right? I mean going from eating an apple and a can of tuna each day to eating A LOT of food…your body get swollen. Am I right?
p.s sorry for my bad English..

@Orson
Read the previous posts and the interview. He did not take steroids.
I think it is envy that leads men to say that everyone that has a nice body takes steroids. Just because they are unable to do the same without drugs they peg everyone else as a drug addict. Quite in the same way women talk about beautiful women like models and actresses, pegging them all as bulimic or saying it is necessarily a product of plastic surgery. People really love to hate…

@ Lilian
I totally agree with you! That’s right!

@ Orson
Welcome we really need a little spice in here…. but remember, you are among Baleheads, no harm meant but … be careful
Anyway you are free to believe whatever you want to. We are free to disagree…..
No matter what CB will say about this story, those who belive he took steriods will continue to believe he took drugs, those who feel he’d never be so stupid to take steroids, will go on to have faith in him.
It is useless to try to make people change their mind.
