Headlines & Rumors

HE’S played a psycho killer, a flying bat and the man who fronts up to the killer machines in the latest of the Terminator series.

Now Welsh-born actor Christian Bale is keeping up his prolific run in big box office movies by starring as Depression-era “G-Man” Melvin Purvis hunting Johnny Depp’s John Dillinger in the summer blockbuster Public Enemies.

In preparing for the new film, Bale visited Melvin “Little Mel” Purvis’s son Alston to help get inside the skin of the larger-than- life character.

Speaking from the US, Alston, 65, said the Welshman did a pretty good job.

He said: “Bale had my father’s mannerisms and accent down to the exact detail. He is a superb actor.

“He wanted to see my family home in South Carolina. We went to the cemetery to see my father’s grave.

“My father never despised Dillinger but he hated Baby Face Nelson because he was a psychopath who killed one of his men.

“In my opinion, and the opinion of a lot of people, my father is the FBI’s greatest legend – and I think this film will show it.”

Bale has been ever-present in blockbusters recently, playing robot-resistance fighter John Connor in Terminator Salvation and Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

Film reviewer David Thomson said: “Bale was the most interesting and depressive Wayne the Batman franchise has given us.

“Christian Bale is now a real movie actor.”

Since he played serial killer Patrick Bateman in the film version of the novel American Psycho, Bale has maintained his position in the front rank of big budget movie actors.

The Hollywood Reporter said of Bale: “He’s not big in the sense of George Clooney but he’s cool and directors want to eat him up.”

Bale’s latest movie character, Melvin Purvis, joined the FBI in 1927 and led the manhunts that tracked such outlaws as Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd.

But he is best remembered for leading the manhunt for “Public Enemy Number One” John Dillinger, which ended in a hail of bullets outside a Chicago cinema on July 22, 1934, with Dillinger the loser.

Purvis was given great acclaim for his actions, but reportedly incurred the wrath of FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, said to be jealous of the attention given to Purvis after Dillinger was killed.

Purvis resigned from the FBI in 1935, served as an Army colonel in World War II and later bought a radio station.

On February 29, 1960, while at his home in Florence, South Carolina, Melvin Purvis died from a shot fired from the gun given to him by fellow agents when he resigned from the FBI, with suicide the official verdict though some believe he was trying to extract a tracer bullet jammed in the pistol.

He was 56 years old.

Christian Bale was born in Haverfordwest on January 30, 1974. His parents were South African-born entrepreneurs: commercial pilot, and talent manager David Bale, and English circus clown and performer Jenny James.

When he was born his father was working at Brawdy airbase in Pembrokeshire.

He was the youngest of four children and after leaving Wales in 1976, Bale spent his childhood in several countries, including England, Portugal, and the United States.

He made his first indelible mark on the screen as Jim in the 1987 film Empire of the Sun, playing a fearless, ebullient British boy separated from his parents when the Japanese invaded Shanghai.

He was cast ahead of 4,000 other hopefuls when the actress Amy Irving recommended him to Steven Spielberg, the film’s director and her husband at the time.
