Glad to hear that Amus, and they forget to tell that Bale plays a small role in the movie. Depp is the lead and takes way more screen time, so it is only natural that he takes the front on this one. Those reporters love to try to put Bale down don’t they? But he has a solid career and his star power is growing. Anyway, he doesn’t care about “star power”, in fact he hates it. And those sites like E! like to measure artists by fame and the money they get. Most great actors don’t get the recognition that they deserve, including Bale, he’s a excellent professional and human being. Having the biggest “star power” doesn’t mean you’re better at acting. Considering the work of both actors, Bale is a better actor than Depp.

I agree with you Lillian, and Amus, you are VERY lucky! My personal take is that Johnny Depp is a “movie star”, but not in the same league as Bale when it comes to acting. To me, Depp is like Tom Cruise. Neither one of them “disappear” in to their character like CB can. I think Brad Pitt is another example, along with Depp and Cruise- I just see Depp, Cruise and Pitt on the screen, not their characters. CB is the BEST! Also- in my humble opinion, Depp is too feminine for my taste. Good looking, yes, but too “femmy.” Bale is WAY more masculine, handsome, and has a very dominant male presence. I doubt Sibi will ever find herself fighting over the mirror with CB while getting ready to go out for the evening! Depp can act, but I think he is average in his acting skill. Think of it per this example: There is NO WAY that I can see Depp playing the boxer Ecklund in CB’s next film role “The Fighter”. Why? Who would believe Depp in that role? He is too much of a dandy in my opinion! Bale however, can do a masculine role like “The Fighter” and his role in 3:10 to Yuma, AND then turn around and still pull off a less masculine, more androgynous role such as in Velvet Goldmine, or a sophisticate like Laurie in “Little Women”. OK, I’ll shut up now. Go CHRISTIAN!! Woo Hoo!

I agree with you 100% and I think you defined Depp well with the word dandy, and the comparison with Cruise and Pitt. I also think the fame and the movie star status went up into their heads. Depp is a great actor to those weird and eccentric characters he plays but when he does a regular (normal) character he is just average. You are right, I can’t see Depp doing The Fighter, or The Machinist, or 3:10 to Yuma, or Rescue Dawn, Batman, or any other movie Bale did, Depp is to “goofy” for that, he is a good comedian though. On the other hand I don’t think Bale would be able to do a Jack Sparrow or a Edward Scissorhands, exactly because he lacks the “goofiness” for that. CB would be great in more inteligent comedies though.

One day it will end. I think it will take a long time tough, but with the passing years and people seeing CB for what he is, a gentleman and a down to earth normal guy in real life, this will become old, tired and out of character. Actually, it already is, but there always are idiots who like to trash everyone, and this is the only thing they have against Bale, so they wont ever release this bone, no matter how bitten and rotten it feels.
Just watch other actors like Crowe and Shia, they do the same with them, always picking at some unfortunate mistake.

First of all I have to say I disagree with you about Depp being better. For me it is fact that Bale is better than Depp, and I can say most (if not all) who posted here before think the same. For us Bale is the best actor around!! (before you get angry read bellow please)

I don’t mean to offend you, and I’m not angry, but a little annoyed. How can you complain about us comparing both actors and them do exactly that saying Depp is better? If you don’t want comparisons then don’t do them yourself, for starters. And forgive us for doing the comparison, but this is a Bale fan site, so you should expect things like that. If you don’t like them or don’t agree with them you should go to a Depp fan site. I don’t mean to offend you, but what I want to say is that we are in a Bale fan site and we don’t go to a Depp fan site and say Bale is better than Depp do we? I’ve seen a lot of Depp fans being quite offensive with Bale, and usually they don’t support their complains with observations, they are just mean and very vicious in their trashing (and usually childish). Do you go to Depp fan sites and deffend Bale against that? Forgive me if I’m wrong but I doubt it. But I do agree with you that we should stop fighting over this and respect each others oppinions more.

In a way I agree with you about comparisons. Thinking carefully they are all foolish in a way, especially depending on how you do them. Artists are all unique (I’m talking about the really good ones, not wannabes and “copies”) and that uniqueness makes them uncomparable. Can we say Monet is better than Van Gogh or Picasso? Or that Bach is better than Mozart? Or that Elvis is better than Michael Jackson? They are all talented artists, geniuses even, and all of them are unique and uncomparable in that respect. All of them are absolutely great in what they did. There is no way we can put numbers to compare their talents.

Unfortunately we live in a culture that thrives on competition and admires it so much that we are always comparing A to B based on numbers (statistics) and so we hear people saying actor A is better than B because he is “more bankable” (sells more tickets) or because he sells more magazines when his face is stamped on the cover. Thing is, this is just stupid, especially because the media is the one responsible for that difference in the first place by influencing the general public that apparently is becoming more affected each day, being some times apparently incapable of thinking and searching answers for themselves, or having their own oppinion.

For that I don’t like comparisons between actors myself. I don’t think DeNiro is better than Al Pacino or vice-versa. They are both equally great and I love both. Because of that influence of the media we are always compelled to make lists of everything. So we have our 10 best actors list. Actually I do have a “bunch” of actors that I love most and I don’t put then in line because they are all unique in their way. I can’t put them in line. Every time I try to do that the list comes out different. Of course, there are some that for many different reasons come closer to our hearts and we are more fond of them. For me I can safely say that Christian Bale stands out on top of that “bunch”, but that doesn’t diminishes the others’s talents. Like I said they are all different and there are some roles or characters that fit them like a glove and I could not imagine another doing that role.
Although, there are different kinds of artists (and actors) and we can compare those kinds in a way. For example, there are the “Al Pacino and Bale” types that are real artists, having real talent for the art, and the “Arnold and Van Damme” types, that have few or no talent at all but are great movie stars because of their physical appeal and are great for the purely commercial (no art) side of the movie industry. There are some actors that stand in between and I’m sure we can find many other categories, and all of them have their value, although I only consider the first category that I mentioned (and some from the “comedy types”) as real artists. This is my personal oppinion though, and you have all the right to disagree with that if you want.

Going back to Bale and Depp… I was a fan of Depp since his days of Jumpstreet and I did watch most of his movies, although now I don’t see him the way as I did before. I still like him and think he is good but very different from Bale, for me they are in different categories. I think Depp is a great comedian and I think he should explore more this side because he is uncomparably better than a Stiller or a Carrey and he could / does elevate the quality of comedies, he’s a natural for that. And Depp is the best actor around to play those fantasy characters he plays. I couldn’t imagine other doing a Sweeney Todd, for example. I don’t see Bale doing those characters. On the other side, when it comes to serious and complex characters Bale is great, he is the best, he is by far way better than Depp and I couldn’t imagine Depp doing the roles Bale did in any convincing way. I think Bale’s great in original, different and dark comedies like American Psycho. He also would be great on movies like Snatch, In Bruges and Fight Club. I do think Bale can do light and fun roles tough, but of a different nature of the majority of comedies we see around, it would have to be more intelligent than those predictable romantic comedies or vulgar / silly comedies. Bale would also be great on a “Chicago”, I think. I can safely say the same thing about Al Pacino or DeNiro. I can’t see those guys doing silly comedies, and in fact I hated all the comedies DeNiro did!

So, to close this too long post, I will say again my oppinion on this. And IMHO, I do think Bale is in the “Al Pacino” category and Depp is not, Depp is a comedian and a “crazy fantasy” role actor. Each is better than the other in their own category. It is my personal preference, I do like the “Al Pacino” category more (I love it!!) and in those kind of roles Bale is uncomparably better than Depp. Period.

Please stop trying to convince people on this site otherwise, this is not the proper place for it… while we might like and respect Depp (or not) we think Bale is better. Please respect it even if you don’t share it.

@Lily Obviously, you are a Depp fan, I see that by your comments. However, the article was clearly blatant upon bashing Christian Bale. You are not on a Depp site, but a site that has predominate Bale fans, of course, they have every right to be upset by the comments made. I for one, think the comments , where made by a man who was typing with one hand, while the other was elsewhere. Just as you were upset by the comments made by the people here about Depp, the people here were upset about the comments made concerning Bale.

And when the smoke clears, and the posters come down, it all boils down to one thing…Christian Bale is getting paid, his family is getting taking care of, no matter what anyone thinks of him.
