Christian Bale is angry at the tragic death of actor Heath Ledger – because he’s convinced the pair would be firm friends if he was still alive.
Bale, who stars alongside Ledger in new Batman movie The Dark Knight, had developed a bond with the Brokeback Mountain star during filming.
Ledger died from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs in New York last January.Bale said during a recent interview: “He was a fantastic guy, we had a lot of fun on set. Yes, he immersed himself into the film completely, but, at the same time, he was so easy-going.
“Heath was infectious; his death makes me angry because I know our friendship would have blossomed had he not died.”
The 34-year-old also explained that he found it easy to be a brooding, angry Caped Crusader in Batman Begins
because his tight-fitting costume made him feel restricted and caged.
The American Psycho movie star insisted on making some vital adjustments to the iconic batsuit for his second outing as Batman – and started with the comic book superhero’s headgear.
Bale reveals his Batman Begins costume was topped off with a helmet that felt like “I was going scuba diving”.
He recalls: “You couldn’t move your head, you were bolted in. It was a vice on my skull, so I had a headache the whole damn time.
“I used it; Batman’s supposed to be full of anger and rage and I didn’t have to act that.”
In the new film Bale was banned from riding a hi-tech motorbike on the set of The Dark Knight because film bosses deemed it too dangerous. A stuntman had to take his place in scenes involving the ‘Bat Pod’ in case the actor fell off and injured himself.
The machine – described as a steamroller combined with a motorbike and atomic missile – is the Caped Crusader’s latest gadget.
Bale says: “Embarrassingly, I didn’t get to ride it. There are other motorbikes in the film that I got to burn about on, but not the Bat Pod – it was deemed too dangerous; they needed me in one piece to finish the damn movie.”
Bale admits the machine was so hard to handle that only one stuntman on the set could ride it without falling off.
