Less than one week before the launch of Christopher Nolan’s superhero saga The Dark Knight, US cinemas have taken drastic steps to cope with intense early demand.
According to national radio reports a number of multiplexes have scheduled 6am screenings in the scramble to accommodate unprecedented advance ticket sales.
Nolan’s brooding sequel to Batman Begins has drummed up such a wave of anticipation that it will play in continuous 24-hour and in some cases 72-hour loops in select large screen IMAX theatres.
Ticket sales for the 94 IMAX theatres alone in the US have already surpassed $2m (£1m) ahead of the July 18 launch and there is speculation that the crime thriller could set a new Hollywood opening weekend record.
Spider-Man 3 currently holds the title for the highest three-day launch after grossing $151.1m (£76.4m) in May 2007.
By comparison, Batman Begins took $48.7m (£24.6m) in its first weekend in June 2005 and went on to amass $205.3m (£103.8m). Factoring in the UK and other international territories, the first picture ended up on $371.9m (£188m).
The Dark Knight, which reportedly cost Warner Bros in the region of $180m (£90m) to make and possibly a further $100m (£50m) to market worldwide, sees Christian Bale reprise his role as the Caped Crusader and defender of Gotham City.
And as all but the most committed desert island dweller will by now be aware, the late Heath Ledger portrays Batman’s nemesis The Joker in a performance that has earned high praise from early reviews in the US.
The Dark Knight will open in select IMAX theatres in the UK on July 18 and roll out in conventional theatres on July 25.
