/Film reader “PWH” attended an early screening for the sports drama David O. Russell’s The Fighter, and says the film will be an awards contender. The film tells the story of Dicky Eklund (Christian Bale), a real life boxer-turned-trainer who rebounded after a run of drugs and crime.
Shepherded his half-brother “Irish” Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg), Dicky had a Rocky-like rise to the world lightweight championship. Ward fought throughout the mid-’80s and ’90s, but he’s best remembered for three battles with Arturo Gotti, two of which went down as the greatest in the history of the sport. Amy Adams plays “a tough, gritty bartender and former college high-jumper” who ends up dating Wahlberg’s character.
The Fighter doesn’t yet have a release date (but is expected to hit theaters in late 2010), so I assume that that it is a very early cut of the film without final cuts, sound mix or score. A lot could change between now and the time of release, they might even do some reshoots. Who knows. Just wanted to add a bit of context. Read the reader test screening review after the jump. Director McG participated in a BD-Live chat for the Terminator Salvation Blu-ray yesterday and said that he is still planning on directing the fifth and sixth “Terminator” movies.
We’re not sure how he knows this considering that the Halcyon group just this week said that they expect their auction for the franchise rights to conclude by February 1st, which means that the current owners of “Terminator” won’t have any say in upcoming films.
“Over the past few weeks, Halcyon and its professionals have engaged in in-depth discussions and negotiations with numerous serious potential buyers, including several major movie studios,” Halcyon said.
Also, “Salvation” didn’t exactly earn big numbers at the box office. The movie carried a production budget of about $200 million, not counting advertising, and made only $371.4 million worldwide. That’s $125.3 million domestically and $246 million internationally.

Batman’s faithful butler, Alfred, has dropped bad news … again.
Batman fans everywhere have been furiously blogging and discussing the twists and turns in the will-they-or-won’t-they debate over a third installment of Christopher Nolan’s revamped Batman franchise. Early on it was announced that, although lead actor Christian Bale was contractually obligated to appear in Batman 3, Nolan had no such obligation and might decide not to direct another one.
Screenwriter David S. Goyer gave fans some hope when he said that he believed Nolan would return if he could “find the story that he’s happy with.” Then, Gary Oldman got everyone excited when he announced that filming would begin in 2010, only to recant his statement a couple days later. Contactmusic speaks to Christian Bale about one of his latest films Public Enemies, the true story of bank robber John Dillinger.
CM: You choose your roles very carefully. What attracted you to Public Enemies?
Bale: Three people: Melvin Purvis, John Dillinger and Michael Mann.
CM: What kind of a man was Melvin Purvis?
Bale: He was very dynamic, though ultimately tragic. Purvis was from a Southern Patrician family. He wanted a job in the State Department, but joined the Justice Department because they were they only ones that had available positions at the time.
CM: Does this movie show us who he really was?
Bale: Well, what we see in the film is only the tip of the iceberg of his life, which was truly fascinating.
CM: How successful was he?
Bale: He rose very quickly in his career, so that in his late 20’s he became a special agent in Chicago -the hot spot in America at that time. Read the rest of this entry »

Terminator Salvation seemed to be plagued with problems, right from the start. First TS star Christian Bale had a YouTube moment, pitching a fit at director of photography Shane Hurlbut, for getting in his way. Then Bale broke his hand shooting a scene, and his co-star Sam Worthington hurt his back. Then special effects man Mike Menardis almost lost his leg in an effects explosion. Stan Winston, the special effects makeup man who designed the original Terminator cyborg and the dinos in Jurassic Park dies of multiple myeloma (TS was his last film).
The film also had to rush through filming due to the impending Screen Actors Guild strike, and an inflating budget, which tapped out at $200 million. As if all that wasn’t enough, several lawsuits were filed against Halcyon Company, the production company that bought the rights to the Terminator franchise, by former rights owners and producers who claimed that they didn’t get their fair cut from the final transfer deal and that they were owed more money. The suits were all settled out of court. Read the rest of this entry »

CHRISTIAN BALE
Age: 35
Years in Show Business: 23
Though he appeared in some TV movies beforehand, Bale’s first major role was as the lead in Steven Spielberg’s “Empire of the Sun.” Since then, his star has steadily risen. Last year, he played the Caped Crusader in “The Dark Knight,” one of the highest-grossing movies ever. This year, he starred in a pair of summer blockbusters: “Terminator Salvation” and “Public Enemies.”

Over the years a generous smattering of actors have donned the cape and nabbed the sidekick to play arguably the most dark and suave of all the comic superheroes, yes folks, we’re talking about the Rolls Royce of spandex-clad action-men, Batman. And while all little boys (and many men we expect) day-dream of stepping into the bat shoes of this oh-so-sexy dark knight there are only a few who will ever grace the screen as the mysterious man-rodent, and even fewer who can garner the title of being the “best batman”. Well, a public opinion poll that closed yesterday can unmask the identity of that very actor, and we can tell you now that it’s none other than the latest and perhaps most critically-applauded of all Bruce Waynes, Christian Bale.
The poll conducted at MTV’s Splash Page gave readers the chance to vote for their favourite of all those who have portrayed the caped crusader in the Hollywood film versions, including Michael Keaton who played him in the 1989 and 1992 versions, Batman and Batman Returns respectively, Val Kilmer who donned the suit for Batman Forever in 1995, and Batman and Robin’s 1997 star George Clooney.
