For many working as extras, it is a chance to meet celebrities and people from varied backgrounds. Ali met an engineer from MIT, as well as local youths from Lowell. She recalled that Christian Bale stayed in drunken character all day.

“I was so impressed with his intensity. He even introduced himself to us in character. I introduced myself as ‘Ali, sting like a bee,’ which he vowed to remember and scream out during filming,” she said.

I know this has nothing to do with Mr Bale himself, but just want to post some bad news on Bale’s co-star, Heath Ledger,  who has just passed away this morning at his Manhattan apartment. RIP Heath.

On a day like this two years ago, Heath Ledger was an Oscar nominee. On Tuesday, the 28-year-old leading man was found dead in a Manhattan apartment, possibly due to a drug overdose. Ledger was discovered naked in bed, surrounded by prescription sleeping pills. A New York City police spokesperson said there was “no obvious sign of suicide.”

Ledger’s housekeeper made the find at about 3:30 p.m. ET, three and a half hours after the actor was last seen alive, police said. Police confirmed another particular of the still-developing story: Namely, that the housekeeper had gone into the bedroom to alert Ledger that his masseuse had arrived for an afternoon appointment.
